The Graduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Sport Management program provides a solid foundation in the business, operational, and administrative aspects of sport management. Taught by faculty in the University's nationally-ranked Department of Kinesiology, located within the School of Public Health, this 12-credit program is designed for individuals in the sports industry who want to learn the management side of sports, as well as professionals who aspire to careers in the sports industry. Drawing upon its proximity to major sports venues, coursework includes visits to sporting events and facilities where students hear from professionals in the field, take behind-the-scene tours, and work at some events.

Application Deadlines:

Fall 2008

  • For best consideration apply by July 15, 2008
  • Final deadline: August 1, 2008

Qualifications

The Graduate School requires all admitted graduate students to have a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States, or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree in another country. A GPA of 3.0 is required for admission into this program (exceptions may be made for individuals with significant professional experience).

It is strongly recommended that students have some experience or coursework in basic accounting and principles of marketing.

Application to the Sport Management Program is a 4-step process:

  1. Complete an online application:
    • Click here to apply for the Graduate Certificate in Sport Management (12 credits).
  2. Submit a nonrefundable application fee of $60.
  3. Submit a complete set of transcripts reflecting all undergraduate and graduate work elected or in progress. Each transcript must bear the signature of the registrar and the seal of the granting institution and should include the years of attendance, courses taken, grades received, class standing and the degree, certificate or diploma received. If you attended the University of Maryland, College Park the SPOC Office will obtain the records of College Park courses completed.
  4. Submit a current résumé.

International Students and applicants with foreign credentials must submit academic records in the original language with literal English translations. Allow at least three months for evaluation. Sport Management - Courses

KNES 635: Foundations of Sport Management
Learn the fundamental skills and principles in the management of sport organizations, including concerns involved in managing sport in public, private, for profit and not for-profit sectors. (3 credits)

KNES 636: Sport and Mass Media
Examine various mass media theories applied to sport; application of communication theory to the study of mediated sport; and research methodologies and critical thinking. (3 credits)

KNES 631: Event Marketing and Management
Gain an introduction to the principles and practices of planning, funding, operating, managing and evaluating events in the sports industry. (3 credits)

KNES 735: Sport Marketing
Understand consumer behavior, marketing research, marketing strategy, integrated marketing communication and event marketing as applied to sport. (3 credits)

SPOC Fee:$40 per semester
Mandatory Fee:$539.35 for full-time students (9 or more credits)
$317.25 for part-time (up to 8 credits)

Late Registration Fee:

A late registration fee of $20 is charged to any student who registers for their first class on or after the first day the class meets.

Parking Fees:
